Grand Finale

OK, I know, two days of fireworks??? Well, that's what we had where I live. A couple last night and this one tonight, sponsored by one of the local bands of Cahuilla Indians and held at the Fantasy Springs Casino & golf course. Everyone was parking their cars in vacant lots and bringing out the camp chairs and drinks. I thought it was a great display and in conjunction with the display, they played music on their radio station to accompany the fireworks. A nice night was has by all.

Happy Independence Day

We celebrate Independence Day yet we call it the 4th of July, rarely by it's real name. We don't call Christmas December 25h Day or Thanksgiving the 4th Thursday in November do we? Interesting that we seem unable to call this important day in our history by it's true name. Either way, have a great day.

Subway Art

When they cleaned up the NY subways they did a great job of incorporating art into the subterranean tunnels. Most of it is mosaics, which is easy to clean. These little critters remind you that it's the stop for the zoo in Central Park.

Yellow Dahlias

What could be more heartwarming than a bouquet of bright yellow dahlias? OK, a good glass of wine maybe. I wish it was possible to grow theses beauties here in the desert but alas, it just gets too hot. And with temps around 112 this time of year they wouldn't survive very long. But a quick drive to the Getty Museum in LA and I can get my fill of a wide variety of dahlias.

Strange Perch

This young barn owl found a new place to rest on the sign of a veterinary hospital. Strange choice, maybe he was injured and needed a doctor. Who knows. He wasn't afraid of us and made no attempt to leave.

Shafts of Light

I've seen may pictures of the slot canyons in northern Arizona but when I experienced them for the first time I was awestruck. A definite big WOW. The way the light bounced off the walls and when shafts of light drifted down through the narrow slots you couldn't help but have your breath taken away. A truly spectacular sight.

Snow Ladies

The botanical garden in Spokan is beautiful in the summer. Full of blooming plants, I'm sure you'd find a couple of favorites. These dwarf Shasa Daisies are aptly named "Snow Lady". So I guess a bunch of them would be considered "Ladies"

Doge's Palace

Venice is my favorite city in the world. The history, the architecture, the art and everything else that's unique to Venice. These columns on the Doge's Palace show a definite Moorish influence. Several decades ago they were black with soot and grime. Today, thanks to modern technology, they have been restored to their glistening white beauty.

Taking a Break - Boboli Gardens

After having climbed more stairs than I thought possible, I understood why this couple was taking a break. No one told me that Boboli Gardens was built on a hillside but if it was good enough for the Medici's it was good enough for me. I can't believe they climbed all those stairs very often. But there was a great view of Florence from the top. I guess all good things come at a price.

Cascading Clematis

In the small village town of Tremolat, France is a gorgeous four star hotel. Loaded with charm and ambiance, a great restaurant and a garden with beautiful plants and flowers. Never before or since have I seen so many spectacular clematis in bloom as I have at this hidden treasure.

Pink Peony

For one short week in June I can find peonies in my local floral shop. It's too hot to grow them where I live and it gets too expensive to travel to France where I first experienced this beautiful flower. I enjoy its faint hint of a fragrance and of course, the bountiful cluster of petals that make this flower look like a cheerleader's pom pom.

Iris in Lily Pond

The sun wasn't out when we visited Monet's Garden but that didn't stop me from taking a ton of pictures. This one was a little different. Dutch Iris aren't as spectacular as the bearded iris but in this setting they make a classy statement.

Italian house signs can be plain or fancy. But the blue on white ceramic numbers was something I found all over Italy. The spray painted version isn't as attractive but does serve a purpose. The flowering vine adds an artistic touch.

Anazasi Ruins

Canyon de Chelly, Arizona was once the home of the ancient Anazasi. Nestled on the canyon walls, these cliff dwellings provided shelter and protection from invaders. No one knows when or why they left the area but thank goodness it's now a National Monument under the protection of both the Federal Government and the Navajo Nation.

Sunset Rose

The hour before sunset is always a pleasant time of the day and today was no exception. I happened to be at the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio, CA and spent some time enjoying the roses in the beautiful maintained rose garden next to the polo fields. I find that the late afternoon sun makes the colors of the petals come alive.

Night Time in Vernazza

The small towns on the Cinque Terre in Italy are quaint and charming but at night they take on a different feel after the tourists are gone. Quiet and peaceful, it's a pleasure to stroll the streets, stop at an outdoor cafe for a drink or coffee and enjoy the ambiance.

Roman Amphitheater

Roman amphitheaters can be found all over Italy and in many European countries but this little treasure sits just below the hilltop town of Volterra in Tuscany. Known for it's alabaster, the small town of Volterra has this hidden treasure that many tourists miss. In fact, many tourists miss seeing the town as it's quite small and a bit out of the way. But I assure you that it is worth the visit.

Sarlat, France is known for it's Fois Gras, or as we Americans call it, goose liver pate. But the French version is awesome. In recognition of their fame, the town has erected these bronze geese in the heart of the old medevial section. But they look a bit confused don't they?.

I found these tiny (slightly bigger than my thumb) orchids on a country road in France. Because of their size, I almost missed them. And it wasn't until I reviewed my photos that I discovered the resemblance to a pair of flying birds.

Another harbinger of spring, the clematis comes in various colors and shapes. Singles, doubles, white, pinks and purples. The intricate centers present an unusual texture and start to turn brown as they age.

Looking Down the Forum

The Roman Forum reeks of history. From Julius Caesar to the Vestal Virgins this was where it was happening in the old days of Rome. And every time I walk down these streets I feel as if I'm transported back in time and can feel the energy of those who walked before me.

White Lilacs

Most of think of purples and lavenders when lilacs are mentioned. However, there are white ones and they are stunning. I have to get up close and smell their wonderful fragrance to know they're lilacs. It just takes a little getting used to the idea of white flowers when I think about these fragrant beauties.

Gondoliers at Night

Day or night, you can always find a gondola in Venice. These are wearing the traditional outfit, black and white striped shirt and straw hat with ribbon trip. Only problem is they usually take their hats off once they have a fare and are out in the canals. Guess they don't want to lose it in the water.

Amaryllis

If you don't have a green thumb, then this is the plant for you. One of the easiest growing flowers, the amaryllis can actually be grown in water. There are special containers for growing them this way or you can plant them in soil and do it the old fashioned way. I personally think that doing it in water is easiest. And they are so dramatic when in bloom. Ranging from whites to reds with a few pinks thrown in for good measure, amaryllis are strikingly beautiful.

Feathers in My Beard

The bearded iris is an elegant flower. It comes in many colors and combinations of colors. It's amazing when you find a white one trimmed in purple or a pale yellow iris with shades of rust painted on the petals. But this is the first time I've noticed these strange "feathers" attached to the beard. I don't know if it's an anomaly or bred into the flower. Whatever the cause I think it's cool.

Dinner on a Side Canal

Venice is one canal after another. No streets, no cars, just canals as a means of moving about the city. Most tourists stick to the main channels such as the Grand Canal. But the treasures of the city can be found by taking a less traveled path down the smaller side canals. I came across this restaurant on a "Ghost Tour" of Venice one evening. It was fun and gave us a glimpse into another side of the city.

Me and My Brother

On the patio outside my bedroom is a mourning dove's nest in the calliandra bushes. I watched the nest being built and hoped that the gardeners wouldn't disturb it before the babies hatched and were safely on their way. Luck was with us and last week they left the nest. Thank goodness as the gardeners have given the bush a big trimming. But the two young doves have stayed close to home along with their mother who still feeds them. Some day soon they will be gone and I'll miss their beautiful cooing sounds.

Chinese Magnolia #2

When I was young, my mother had a Chinese Magnolia tree in the front yard, just outside my bedroom window. She loved it as it was an early harbinger of Spring as they opened their blossoms on naked tree branches. So every time I see one of these magnificent trees in bloom I always think of Mom.

Lilac Season

There's a special section at the Descanso Gardens in La Canada that's devoted to lilacs. Yes, a small forest of them. All colors, sizes and shapes. And they were all in bloom this weekend. The aroma you smell walking among the young trees is overwhelming.

Jumping Cholla

See those sharp spines? They're on the cholla plant and don't really jump at you but it doesn't take much to disturb them and the next thing you know you're covered with the sharp prickly things. Just be careful. They come unattached from the cactus awfully easy.

Pueblo Home

Taos Pueblo is similar to a large apartment house. Or should I say two apartment houses. There is a north and a south Pueblo separated by a small stream. This particular house/apartment is located in the south pueblo. Aesthetically, I like the north one but if you poke around there are lots of good nooks and crannies in the south pueblo.

Abstract in Stone

The weather worn slots in the Antelope Canyon area outside of Page, Arizona are spectacular. As the light changes so does the effect and colors of the various layers of sandstone that formed these narrow slot canyons.

Poppies & Cream Cups

I'm hoping that the Poppy Preserve near Lancaster, California will get another show as good as the one I saw several years ago. There are acres and acres of California Poppies on the hillsides and when they bloom, they turn to gold.

Desert Poppy

The wildflowers are starting to bloom, albeit slowly, but you can find both these Desert Poppies, Eschscholizia parishii, and the Arroyo lupines, Lupinus sparisflorus, in the Box Canyon area just outside the small town of Mecca, California. They make a beautiful and dramatic combination with the yellows against the blues. Time to dust off those cameras and take a road trip.

Orchids on a Tree?

No, they're not really orchids but they do call the Bauhinia variegata an Orchid Tree as the flowers do have a resemblance to orchids. A native of India, when this tree blooms it's covered from top to bottom with these large, fragrant flowers.

Perigee Moon

Tonight was the night that the moon was going to be the closest to the earth for another 19 years. That meant it was supposed to appear larger. Determined as I was to capture this, I set out with a friend after an early dinner to set up our tripods and cameras in readiness for the big event. Our biggest concern was a potential cloud cover. There were scattered, thin clouds and sure enough, they remained on the horizon as the moon rose. But we snapped away regardless. However, I've seen larger appearing moon rises in the past. Maybe it was the clouds and haze in the sky, but we weren't impressed! So much for all the hype.

Moonrise Over the Tennis Garden

It was a beautiful evening at the Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, CA. Federrer (in the blue) was playing Nadal (orange) tonight for the semi finals in men's doubles. Federrer's team won and will compete tomorrow for the finals. But the full moon rising over the stadium only added to the evening (upper right). Tomorrow is supposed to be the closest the moon's orbit will be to the earth for the next 19 years. They say it'll look about 14% larger. I just hope we don't have a cloud cover.

Chia

Also know as California Sage, the Chia plant is a member of the sage family. The dark purple, prickly globes have small lavender flowers. The plants have a medicinal, minty odor and could be steeped to make a mucilaginous (your word for the day!) drink.

Every once in a while I see something wild that catches my eye which I have to share. This photo of former tennis pro Bud Collins, he's the one in the bright yellow polka dotted pants and orange sneakers. I wonder if this was really a suit and he forgot the jacket!! But if he switched shirts with the other guy and he'd have a matched outfit. I was lucky enough to attend today and always enjoy watching the great players at the top of their game. This petite French gal wasn't able to beat Maria Sharipova but she put up a good fight.

Green Goddess

The La Quinta Arts Festival is the #3 ranked art festival in the nation and well worth attending if you ever get the chance. As part of the ambiance, the La Quinta Arts Foundation who sponsor the event, arranged for costumed mimes to roam the festival grounds. This year it was this "Green Goddess" and her sidekick (he looked like dust and dirt).

Cactus in Bloom

They're not very big, just slightly larger than my thumbnail, but these tiny cactus blossoms were a real find today. A friend and I trekked down to Borrego Springs to see what wildflowers might be in bloom. We were slightly disappointed, not seeing as much as we had last year. But we figured we might be about a week too early as we did see signs of buds and new plants. One of the best ways to find flowers is to take a hike off the beaten path. And that's where we found this lone cactus starting to burst out in blooms.

Brittle Bush

Northeast of the Salton Sea is a weather worn area known as Box Canyon. Eroded by water and wind, the hills take on a erie look but come alive when the wildflowers are in bloom. This brittle bush, Encelia farinosa, has yellow daisy like flowers and love to grow on rocky hillsides and in sandy bajadas. As the flowers die, they stand tall on dried "brittle" stalks above the parent bush. Early missionaries used to burn the resin for incense.

Bladder Pod

Yes, the wildflowers are in bloom. But you need to get out of the car and take short walks to find the good ones. We don't have fields covered with blossoms, but they are out there. This is a Bladder pod, Isomeris arborea, it's a member of the caper family and a favorite nectar plant for hummingbirds. What's neat about this plant is the inflated seed pods, hence it's common name.

One of my favorite cities for beautiful sunsets in Tucson, Arizona. I don't know why, meteorologically speaking, it sports some spectacular skies as the sun sets but I just know it's totally awesome.

Way to the Roof

For the Indians of the Southwest, the only cool spot during the hot summer evenings was on the roof of their pueblo style dwellings. And this was the way up. No fancy stairs. And hopefully the lashings holding the rungs didn't give out.

Wes' Peony

Living in the desert does have some drawbacks. For an avid gardner it's not being able to grow cool weather plants and those that require more humidity. But the benefits are pretty neat. Year round sun (almost) and some pretty unusual plants. Guess one can't have it all.

White Prickly Poppy

Related to the Matilija Poppy, this cousin looks very similar although it's smaller in size. It also has sharp, prickly spines on the leaves, stalks and buds. It grows at an elevation of 1,500 - 8,000 feet in most of the Southwest. The plant is distasteful to livestock and tends to increase in heavily grazed rangeland. The plant is also poisonous but the yellow sap has been used to treat some skin diseases and the plants were also boiled for baths in the treating rheumatism.

Cholla

Wildflower season is almost upon us. A few flowers have opened their buds but it's been pretty cool here so I expect a later rush of blossoms than normal. This cholla, a member of the cactus family is a vibrant green. Just watch out for the stickers as they come out so easily they get the name "jumping cholla".

Afternoon at the Fair

It's county fair time!!! Yes, it's a lot earlier than most county fairs but it's also the National Date Festival here in the desert. It originally started as the Date Festival as this was the season when the dates were all harvested and ready for distribution. Then it became the Riverside County Fair. I miss the displays of produce (yes, we do harvest our agriculture earlier than most areas in the U.S. but it's not the same as a traditional county fair). We have camel races, ostrich races, Tales of Arabian nights and things themed to being the date capital of the U.S. And it's fun to do the carnival midway.

Mourning Dove

I love the cooing sound doves make. It's soft, gentle and soothing. These beautiful birds, their feathers so smooth, are found all over California. This one was posing in front of a friend's house the other afternoon.

It Snowed Last Night

I live in the desert, in fact, my house is actually below sea level. It gets hot here in the summer and yes, there is snow, but only on the top of the nearby mountains. Mt. San Jacinto, which is the backdrop for Palm Springs is over 10,000 so we do get to see snow and there is a tram to the top so we can even play in the snow without having to drive in it to get there.

Monet's Rooster

It was an overcast day when we visited Monet's Garden but the local fowl weren't fazed. This rooster was busy keeping track of all the hens in the yard. And chase them he did. He was quite a "cocky" character.

The Portland Rose Gardens are a wild explosion of color in the summer. If you love roses, add it to your list of must see places. This hybrid tea rose, "Artistry", is a gorgeous color. A deep, rich coral, it screams for attention.

Oriental Poppy

One of the most dramatic poppies, the oriental or Papaver orientale, is native to southwest Asia. Some of its spectacular flowers are as big as peonies. They range in shades of pink through to red with 4 inch dark centers.

Harley

I love watching the Westminster Dog Show. I don't know a lot about the different breeds but the spunk some of the dogs have makes it a pleasure to watch. I rarely pick Best in Show, although I did the year the bloodhound won. This is Harley, a pedigree Pembroke Welsh Corgi puppy. Quite the hearding dog. For such a shorty, you'd think he wouldn't have a chance with bigger animals but this breed does a great job.

One Old Wheel

Orange Day Lily

It's a real shame that some flowers only last one day. Which is why they call these "Day Lilies". Good for a day and they are history. They'd make a beautiful cut flower if only they lasted longer. But they do make a great border plant in gardens.

White Chinese Magnolia

This is the season to start visiting the Huntington Library and Gardens in San Marino. The beautifully landscaped grounds always have something of interest in bloom. These Chinese Magnolias always are fascinating as they bloom while the stalks are void of leaves. So you have a naked branch with lots of beautiful flowers.

Cogulot Roses

Nestled in a small cemetery in the French countryside were these delicate roses peaking over the fence. An old style rose with tinges of deep pink reminds me of crushed peppermint. It's definitely a refreshing sight amongst the tombstones.

Chateau Biron

This was a pivotal chateau in France during the 100 year war. Eleanore of Aquetaine was married in the small chapel on the left. Any more history than that and you'll have to refer to the history books.

Pink Poppy

I always enjoy going to France to see the poppies. Red ones, orange ones, pink ones. When you live in the California desert the only poppies you get to see are California Poppies. Don't get me wrong, I love it when the fields are covered with them. But the oriental poppy is more stately and elegant.

I am always amazed at the intricacies of nature. Flowers that have multiple colorations, like someone painted them that way, are the biggest mystery. I think it's cool. And the more vivid the colors, the wilder it gets.

It had been a stormy day along the Italian Cinque Terra with no hope of any decent light for photos. I had dinner plans with friends so rushed back to the room to change then scooted down to the water's edge to meet them when I came upon this scene. Needless to say, I was late for dinner but it was worth it to get this shot.

Machaeranthera orcuttii

Common name - "Borrego Aster". This beautiful purple wildflower is abundant in the badland regions of the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. The park is located in Southern California just west of the Salton Sea. This perennial grows to 36" in height and is very restricted to the local it grows in.
